Hi from John

A quick update on me and what I've been up to

By John Fox · August 30, 2026

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I wrote to most of you, so here’s a little of what I’ve been up to: what I’m building at work, something I’m trying as a way to create community where I live, what I’ve been listening to, and life in a California beach town.

First, the work thing.

Remember Moneyball with Brad Pitt (as Billy Beane)? Ignored old-school bias. Found undervalued talent. Took the A’s to a 20-game winning streak and the playoffs.

That’s the inspiration behind a free sales app I’m building with my co-founder and developer, David. We call it Moneyball.win.

I’ve spent most of my career in sales prospecting for new customers. The more customers I won, the harder it was to keep track of what else might be possible with each one. When you’re responsible for the full customer relationship — from prospecting and closing to growing the account — the urgent easily crowds out the important. Follow-up gets pushed off, circumstances change, and good customers quietly disappear inside your CRM.

It’s every sales rep’s fear:

Somewhere in your CRM…
…a good customer just became somebody else’s

Moneyball finds those undervalued accounts — the overlooked second sales, cross-sells, win-backs, and more — and brings those opportunities to the surface for the sales rep to pursue.

Curious how much of your customers’ business is still available to win? Answer a handful of questions you already know the answers to, and our assessment estimates how much revenue is realistically achievable but not yet being worked.

No login. No data upload.

Take our assessment…

…or see what a finished one looks like.

I’d genuinely like to hear what you think. And if someone comes to mind who works in B2B sales, I’d appreciate you passing it along.

Leading Off

When I arrived in San Diego last year I decided to make a purposeful effort to meet people. My idea was to make it super easy for people to say yes to doing something fun. Last September I bought 10 tickets to see a theatrical performance of Annie. I invited a couple across the hall, a man I met at church, a veterinarian (who invited two of her friends), and David and two of his friends.

Total fun!

So each month I invite people I meet—at church, on the Oceanside pier, in my apartment building, walking their dogs, even my barber and parking-spot neighbor. All ages. All backgrounds and beliefs.

We go to movies, dinners, lunches, the Hollywood Bowl, coffee at the D Street overlook in Encinitas, yoga, and more theater (Phantom of the Opera is next month…can’t wait).

And yes, I cover the costs to make it easy to say, “yes!”

We’re all in this soup together. May as well get to know one another.

Walk-Up Playlist

West Coast is my current upbeat Spotify playlist for sales closers.

Turn it up when it’s the bottom of the 9th, you’re coming up to the plate and need enough energy for one more call, one more email or one more reconnection with a customer who may not be finished buying from you. It’s 1hr 3min of energy and healthier than Red Bull.

On Deck

Hit reply and tell me what you’re working on right now. Love to know how I can help you.

Summer in Oceanside CA is hard to beat. I still have to remind myself that I live in a beach town. So if you travel here, stop by. If you’re up for it, join a monthly event.

That’s all for now. I hope you’re well!
